After several days of restrictions on UK airspace, easyJet has finally launched its first flight in the region today (Thursday 22 April) from Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

Passengers from Yorkshire will now be able to take off with the UK’s largest airline as operations to five new routes are now underway. The first flight to depart from the airport was at 06:45 to Faro.

Mike Morton, Airport Director at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, said:
“We were hoping to start these new routes earlier in the week but obviously due to the restrictions on UK airspace we have had to wait and are pleased to finally be able to send easyJet passengers off on the inaugural flights to European cities and holiday spots.

“The early easyJet flights into Doncaster will be part of the effort to repatriate people back into the UK from routes that easyJet serves. We are pleased that we are able to offer our services and play a part in this important challenge to get people home.

“Ultimately the five new routes to Amsterdam, Prague, Barcelona, Faro and Majorca open up new markets to us and will make Doncaster Sheffield Airport a more attractive offering to businesses and passengers from across the region as well as for European visitors looking for best way to visit South Yorkshire.”

Ali Gayward, Commercial Manager for easyJet, adds:
“easyJet is committed to expansion across the UK regions and we’re now not only the largest UK airline, but the largest airline in the North of England.

“This means we can provide greater access to our famously low-fares and convenient services from your local airport. In addition, we’re looking to develop the inbound market, highlighting Yorkshire as a destination to Europeans, helping to bring even greater investment to the local economy.”

easyJet will operate some 21 departures per week from the South Yorkshire Airport and expects to carry around 300,000 passengers to five new destinations in their first year of operation, making it the largest low-fares airline to operate from the Airport. The services to Amsterdam, Barcelona, Faro, Majorca and Prague, will bring a mix of city break opportunities, sunshine routes and business destinations.
