Yorkshire flights up and running to European Capital of Culture

Flights direct to the Latvian capital of Riga are now up and running from Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

Passengers will board the first Wizz Air flight this evening (June 20) from the Yorkshire airport as the new twice weekly (Mondays and Fridays) route begins.

Riga, which is the European Capital of Culture for 2014, is becoming a popular destination for weekend breaks and also holds the esteemed status of being a Unesco World Heritage Site.

The route between Doncaster Sheffield Airport and Riga is the only new UK flight to the Wizz Air base in Latvia.

To mark the launch of the flights, Rebeka Roze (pictured) assistant manager of Rebeka’s Bistro in Doncaster presented a traditional Latvian honey cake to airport officials. Rebeka’s Bistro specialise in Latvian and Eastern European cuisine in the town.

Last week, Wizz Air flights to the Romanian capital Bucharest began from Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

The Yorkshire airport is firmly established as Wizz Air’s second largest UK base, operating a total of 22 flights per week to eight destinations including Vilnius in Lithuania and Gdansk, Warsaw, Katowice, Poznan and Wroclaw in Poland.

Chris Harcombe, head of aviation at Doncaster Sheffield Airport said: “We are delighted to have the route to Riga up and running and continue our expansion of destinations with Wizz Air.

“The Latvian capital is an ideal location for weekend breakw and it’s fitting that flights begin in the year Riga is named the European Capital of Culture, with hundreds of events taking place throughout 2014.

“Wizz Air has become an established and valued partner of Doncaster Sheffield Airport since it established a connection here in 2012. With flights to Bucharest also starting this month too, it’s been a busy period as more new destinations continue to be added offering passengers in the region even greater choice. We look forward to increasing this further in the coming years.”
