Caroline Flint MP backs Doncaster Sheffield Airport growth

Caroline Flint MP was a recent guest at Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield to discuss the impact of new routes and the new Enterprise Zone.

She said: “The new routes opening for the summer, beginning with Belfast this week, are a real sign that Robin Hood Airport has an important role to play for tourism and business in Yorkshire and beyond.

“With a ten hectare Enterprise Zone set to create 3,500-4,000 jobs and the FARRRS link road underway, the importance of this airport in building Doncaster’s economy and attracting new jobs couldn’t be better made.”

Steve Gill, managing director of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, said: “It is great for Caroline to visit when we are very optimistic about the airport’s success in 2014 and beyond. Caroline saw the potential of this airport and business park 16 years ago, when it was still owned by the Ministry of Defence.

“I’m delighted her campaign for the airport, for the link road, and Peel Group’s long-term vision is being realised. It is difficult to imagine Doncaster today without an airport.

“Investors are always looking for new sites which will put their business ahead of the market and we feel confident the new Enterprise Zone at Doncaster Sheffield Airport will offer the ideal combination for companies to achieve success.

“There are already a number of businesses in close proximity to the airport and as our reputation for providing access to key destinations, supported by a strong strategic location, continues to grow, it will be an attractive opportunity for companies to establish a base here.

“Having effective transport connectivity is vital to any successful economy and the Sheffield City Region is working hard towards achieving this, especially with the new Finningley and Rossington Regeneration Route Scheme (FARRRS), linking the M18 to the airport.”

The MP’s visit follows the news that Doncaster Sheffield Airport will be home to a new ten hectare Enterprise Zone, which experts believe will create up to 4,000 new jobs over the next five years.

The FARRRS link road to the M18 could lead to the creation of more than 20,000 jobs and investment of over £1.5bn in the long-term.

Meanwhile, new routes from the airport include LinksAir, flying twice-daily on weekdays to Belfast and three days each week to the Isle of Man, plus Wizz Air beginning flights to the beautiful city of Riga.
