How to Get a Pet Passport

When travelling abroad, it used to be the case that you would have to leave your pets in the care of a family member or friend, or alternatively be forced to pay for professional care.  Today, if you are travelling to or from the UK you can get a passport for your pets allowing them to travel with you.

The Process

The process of obtaining a Pet Passport has to be done step by step.  Planning ahead is essential, as the process takes up to 9 months from start to finish.  Throughout the process all dealings with your pet should be undertaken by a Local Veterinary Inspector.  Contact details can be found in your local telephone directory.

  • Step 1 The first step to getting your Pet's Passport is to have your pet fitted with a Microchip.  The Microchip has a unique number that will also be on your Pet's Passport when it arrives.  This number identifies your pet to the authorities when entering or leaving the UK.
  • Step 2 Your pet needs to be vaccinated against Rabies before a Pet Passport can be issued.  This usually requires a course of 2 injections, one on the same day as the Microchip is fitted and another 2 weeks later.
  • Step 3 A blood test is then taken 30 days after the 2nd vaccination, to ensure that the vaccinations have been successful.  Once the results have been confirmed as ok your pet can be issued with a passport.  Please note - it can take up to 4 weeks to receive the blood test results back from the Government Laboratory.
  • Step 4 Once the blood test results have returned and are confirmed as ok, the L.V.I can then issue your Pet's Passport.  This process involves one final check to certify that your pet is free from rabies.

The Six Month Rule

Although your Pet's Passport will be valid for travel into many countries 21 days after issue, your pet cannot return into the UK for a full 6 months from the date the blood sample was taken. Therefore the total time it takes to obtain a full Pet Passport valid for re-entry into Britain is almost 9 months.

Keeping the Passport Valid

Your Pet's Passport will remain valid for as long as you continue to have your pet's rabies booster done on time. Observe this date carefully as no delay is permitted.  If your pets vaccinne lapses, even by a day your pet will have to undergo the entire process again. Under these circumstances the 6 month rule will also be re-applied.  Boosters are the responsibility of the pet owner.  The rabies vaccination date is clearly marked on your Pet's Passport.
